7th September
The Royal Hall in the newly refurbished Villa
Marina was full to capacity for last Saturday night's annual prize presentation
ceremony for the Scottish Provident children's cycling league.
Guests of honour including Margaret Brown and Gary Corkhill from the IOM Sports
Council, Lawrence Corlett from the Public Lottery Trust and Donald Gelling MLC.
Olympian and Tour de France Feminin stage winner Marie Noon was their host for
the night.
Scottish Provident's managing director Lillian Boyle and communications manager
Alison Rymill were kept busy presenting the numerous awards, starting with the
very popular novices class and finishing with the highly competitive racing bike
categories.
The overall class winners were Ben Cunningham, Kaitlin Slack, Alex Cain, Katie
Harris, Aaron Faragher, Kate Marshall, Joe Harris, Victoria Kinrade, Matthew
Davies, Laura Kinley, Joshua Knights, Eleanor Stokoe, Joshua Cowie, Michelle
Gage, Thomas Mazzone, Alicia Corlett (two categories), James Berry, Mark
Christian, Rebecca Whipp, Matthew Looker and Caroline O'Neill.
The evening ended with the presentation of four very prestigious awards, three
of which were being introduced for the first time.
In recognition of his outstanding performances on and off the Island, twelve
year old James Berry received the coveted Alex Forrest memorial cup. Alex's
widow, accompanied by her son Brian and grandson Ryan, presented the trophy to
James. Previous winners include Mark Cavendish and Christian Varley, who both
started their successful cycling careers in the Tuesday night league at the NSC.
Several family members of the late Commonwealth gold medalist Peter Buckley
attended the function to hand over a magnificent new trophy that they have
donated in Peter's memory. The award is to be presented each year to an emerging
young talent from the younger age groups in the league. Matthew Davies was mamed
as the first recipient of the award and he was obviously delighted as he
accepted the impressive silverware from Peter's relatives Marion Gell, Allison
Cowin, Nancy Gorry and Linda Quilliam.
The late Steve Hislop, a much loved patron of Team Scottish Provident IOM, was
also remembered with another superb trophy to be awarded annually to a rider of
exceptional talent. It was a very emotional moment when Steve's mum Margaret
together with his former partner Kelly and sons Connor and Aaron presented the
cup to the inaugral winner Mark Christian.
Finally, Mrs Rozanne Wilson, the widow of keen cyclist George Abbott Wilson, has
kindly set up an annual scholorship of £100 in memory of her late husband to
further the career of a deserving youngster. Man of the moment James Berry was
the grateful recipient for 2004 and he was very honoured to receive the cheque
from Mrs Wilson in person.
A total of 494 young cyclists took part in this year's league, with an average
of 211 turning out for each of the seventeen rounds that were staged. The fourth
round of the series attracted an all-time record entry of 286 competitors.
The league's final overall standings can be viewed on the results page. A good
selection of photographs will be available shortly.

With the track still damp from a heavy shower earlier in the day, the under 12's

* A squad of nine riders represented the club with
distinction in last weekend's Kerry International Youth Tour in the Republic of
Ireland.
Competing against top class opposition, James Berry added to his already
impressive tally of successes in 2004 by scoring a superb overall victory in the
under 12's category.
Following a very close battle, James eventually took the coveted winner's yellow
jersey with just one second in hand over Mark Baxter (PPV Palmer Park Velo), who
the previous week had pipped James for the gold medal in the British youth
championships.
James showed true grit throughout the tour, especially on the final stage when
he overcame a concerted challenge from the Welsh national team, whose top rider
Alex Greenfield was third overall, 7 seconds behind the young Manxman.
In the same class Jonathan Cregeen really blossomed over the three days, ending
the race in a very good 11th overall and 7th best under 11 year old. Andrew
Marshall also performed well to come 37th on GC and 22nd in the under 11's
class.
Getting back up to speed after his recent illness, Mark Christian thrived in the
cut and thrust of stage racing and mixed it with the best for a fine 5th place
overall in the under 14's event. He finished just 20 seconds behind the winner
William Penn (Lichfield City CC).
A little further down the field, Sam Looker produced one of the rides of the
weekend. Climbing like a demon, Sam fought his way into a brilliant 8th spot
overall, but more importantly won the green jersey for being the top under 13
year old in the group. Sam will be a force to be reckoned with in next year's
tour.
After the first few stages Tom Black, who is still getting over his appendix
operation, was lying in 6th position on GC, but struggled slightly on the hills
and, despite a very good final stage, slipped down to 21st overall, some 5mins
46secs ahead of team mate Matheu Marshall, who was a respectable 37th overall
and 17th in the under 13's.
Unfortunately, Caroline O'Neill was brought down in a crash on the very first
stage and lost over 6 minutes, which put her out of contention for a high
placing on GC. However, she rode well on the remaining stages, showing a great
improvement in her hill climbing, and clawed her way back up to 45th place in
the overall standings and 22nd in the under 13's class.
Matthew Looker was very impressive in the under 16's categry and was looking
good for a top twenty finish until he hit mechanical problems on the hilly third
stage and lost valuable time . He probably finished in the middle 30's, but his
final position is still to be officially confirmed.

of the Scottish Provident league, staged at a balmy NSC last Tuesday night.
A delighted Liam Gregson notched up his first ever win in the novices class.
Caitlyn Smith was the best girl in an excellent second place and Adam Callow had
his best ride of the season to claim third spot ahead of Molly Wooton, Corey
Phillips and Connie Watson. Newcomers Jessica Lloyd and Shanya Pickett finished
well up the order in 8th and 14th positions respectively.
Katie Harris continued her winning ways in the born 1999 age group, taking the
chequered flag well clear of Marcus Simpson to post her tenth win. Alex Cain was
third and Victoria Watson returned from holiday to grab fourth place. Daniel
McMurray was a good ninth in his first outing of the season.
In the born 1998 event Owen Dudley tasted victory for a third time. Thomas Cowin
was second, Luis Novo-Smith third and Thomas Quayle fourth. Emma Nicholson edged
out Kate Marshall for the girls' honours in fifth spot, with James Costain,
Matthew Kneale, Max Murray and Roc Faulds filling the remaining places on the
top ten leader board. Seven times winner Aaron Faragher had a spill on the last
lap, but gamely carried on to finish 27th.
Joe Harris maintained his 100% record in the born 1997 race. Matthew Bostock led
the chasers home for second place and Breeshey Cain was the top girl in third
position.
Despite a determined effort, Leon Mazzone was unable to prevent Matthew Davies
from recording another victory in the born 1996 category. Laura Kinley did well
to come through from the back of the grid to pip Jack Murray for third spot.
Joshua Knights was in control of the born 1995 class from start to finish,
although Kevin Kelly never gave up hope of catching him. Third placed Eleanor
Stokoe won her ongoing battle with Anna Christian for the girls' honours.
There was an exciting finish to the combined born 1994 and born 1993/92 group,
with Thomas Mazzone holding off the fast finishing Alicia Corlett for a well
deserved win. Sam Black, Alexander Haddock, Matthew Jones and Jacob Holden were
not far behind in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th places.
Resplendent in the yellow jersey he won at last weekend's Kerry International
Youth Tour, James Berry rode everyone off his wheel for yet another impressive
victory in the under 12's racing bikes. Thomas Mazzone was the runner-up ahead
of Oliver Shimmin and the fast improving Jonathan Cregeen.
In the under 14's/under 16's racing bikes Mark Christian made a decisive last
lap attack on the back section of the course, gaining enough of an advantage to
hold onto the pole position in the sprint for the line. Tom Black got the better
of Matthew Looker, Mark Redhead, Niall Shimmin and Sam Looker for second place.
Holly Black and Alex Callister were the popular winners of the born 1997 and
born 1995 handicaps.

* Round 12 of the club's Scottish Provident
league was held at the NSC last Tuesday night in perfect racing conditions.
In the hotly contested novices class Ben Cunningham scored his fourth win to
further strengthen his bid for the overall honours. Daniel Sheffield was second
and three times winner Josef Killey third. Adam Callow produced his best ride of
the series to slot into fourth place, with Caitlyn Smith pipping Molly Wooton,
Leonie Gilden and Connie Watson for the girls' prize. Jessica Lloyd did well to
finish 11th on her debut.
In the born 1999 & later age group Katie Harris stormed into an early lead and
was never headed. Alex Cain rode strongly for a comfortable second place, while
Nathan Pope gained his first podium finish in third spot. Newcomer Jordan Cooper
was an excellent 4th, one place ahead of the second best girl Eleanor Davies. A
determined Ben Cregeen held off Gemma Kirkham, Laura Corkhill and Amy Whiteway
for 6th position.
Aaron Faragher returned from a three week break to record his seventh success in
the born 1998 event. Thomas Cowin and Thomas Quayle were second and third
respectively, with Matthew Corkhill just managing to hold off the chasing pack -
spearheaded by Laura Kinley - for fourth place.
Leading from start to finish, Castletown's Joe Harris cruised to another
impressive victory in the born 1997 race. Following a close tussle that went all
the way to the line, Victoria Kinrade got the better of Breeshey Cain for second
place. Aaron Beattie, Dillon Killeen and Kathryn Hull completed the top six.
Matthew Davies powered to a clear win in the born 1996 class, taking the
chequered flag well ahead of Leon Mazzone, who was a safe second. Laura Kinley
overtook Ashley Faragher on the line to grab third place.
Joshua Knights picked up maximum points for a ninth time in the born 1995 group.
Anna Christian and Eleanor Stokoe resumed their battle for the girls' honours,
with Anna having the edge on this occasion. James Everitt led the rest of the
field home in fourth position.
In the born 1994-91 combined group Thomas Mazzone reeled in an early attack by
Sam Black before claiming his ninth win. Sam was a good second ahead of
Alexander Haddock, Andrew Marshall, Craig Norrey and Jacob Holden.
Fresh from his silver medal winning success at last Sunday's British national
youth championships, James Berry left the rest of the field in his wake for an
emphatic victory in the under 12's racing bikes. Richard Foden was the runner-up
and Thomas Mazzone third. Jonathan Cregeen was a fine fourth ahead of Oliver
Shimmin, Christopher Nicholson and Adam Johnson.
Warming up for this coming weekend's Kerry Youth Tour, Matthew Looker
outsprinted Mark Redhead, Mark Christian and Niall Shimmin for a well deserved
win in the under 14/under 16 racing bikes. Caroline O'Neill was the top girl in
seventh place.
The born 1998 and born 1996 handicaps went to longmarkers Edith Bankes-Jones and
Daniel De Weert.

* Great news - team member James Berry picked up a
silver medal in the under 12's category at British Cycling's national circuit
race championships, staged at Hillingdon near London last Sunday.
Mark Christian, who has still not fully recovered from the infection he has been
suffering from, also did well to finish in the top ten in his class and Laura
Gage had a good ride to come about 13th in her age group.
In the under 12's race James went from the gun and quickly built up a sizable
gap of about 50 yards. On the third of seven laps he was joined by Mark Baxter
(Palmer Park Velo). The two riders worked well together and succeeded in further
extending their lead to a comfortable 300 yards. On the penultimate lap,
however, Baxter refused to work and seemed content to bide his time sitting on
the young Manx rider's wheel. James led the sprint out for the chequered flag,
but it was the wily Baxter who got the verdict on the line.
Mark Christian rode very well to stay at the front of the field throughout the
under 14's event. He was in the thick of the action from the start and was
instrumental in chasing down several attacks. The race ended in a bunch sprint,
with Mark still very much in contention for a medal. Due to his recent illness,
however, he did not have the legs for the final surge and crossed the line in
7th place (subject to conformation) - a very creditable performance considering
the circumstances.
After managing to stay with the leading group for much of the under 16's girls
race, Laura Gage lost contact on the final lap, eventually finishing just
outside the top ten.

* Good luck to team members Joshua Cowie and James
Berry in their respective off-island endeavours this coming weekend.
On Thursday night Josh leaves for Holland to compete in a youth tour, while
James (and possibly Mark Christian) will be in Hillingdon, London on Sunday for
British Cycling's national youth circuit race championships.

* The club is sending a small (by our standards)
team of nine riders to the forthcoming Kerry Youth Tour in the Republic of
Ireland.
James Berry, Jonathan Cregeen, Sam & Matthew Looker, Tom Black, Andrew & Matheu
Marshall, Mark Christian and Caroline O'Neill will all be competing in the
event, which starts on Saturday, 31st July and ends on Monday, 2nd August.

14th July 2004
There was another good turn out of 223 competitors
for last Tuesday night's round of the Scottish Provident league, staged at an
overcast but mainly dry NSC.
Ben Cunningham came out on top in the novices class. Thomas Bostock - the winner
of the last three rounds - was second and Daniel Sheffield third. Alex Irving,
Corey Phillips and Jacob Millard all had good rides to finish 5th, 7th and 9th
respectively. Connie Watson was the first girl across the line in 10th spot.
In the born 1999 & later age group Marcus Simpson notched up his second win,
with Victoria Watson grabbing her first podium finish in an excellent second
place. Dillon Cowie was third followed by Matthew Nixon, Charles Whittaker and
Alex Cain. Relative newcomer Ben Mazzilli was a very good 13th.
Having tasted victory for the first time in the previous week's round, Owen
Dudley triumphed again in the born 1998 category. Thomas Cowin and Thomas Quayle
were second and third for the second week running and Matthew Draper was a good
4th just ahead of the top girl Kate Marshall.
Matthew Bostock took advantage of the non appearance of series leader Joe Harris
to score his first success in the born 1997 event, with runner-up Victoria
Kinrade edging out Breeshey Cain and Tamara Preskey for the girl's prize. Dillon
Killeen was an impressive 5th.
After several close finishes to the born 1996 race, Matthew Davies decided to
attack from the gun. The strategy payed off and he took the chequered flag well
clear of thr rest of the field. Leon Mazzone never gave up the chase but in the
end had to settle for second place. There was a close battle for third position,
with Jamie Dudley just getting the verdict over Laura Kinley in the sprint for
the line.
In the born 1995 class Joshua Knights unshipped his chain on the penultimate
lap. He replaced it, but could only manage to claw his way back up to 8th place
in the short time left available. Meanwhile, at the front of the race there was
a great scrap going on for the top honours. At the finish it was Eleanor Stokoe
who powered down the long finishing straight to record a memorable victory ahead
of Kevin Kelly and Anna Christian.
Thomas Mazzone increased his tally of wins to seven in the born 1994 & born
1993-91 combined group. Alicia Corlett was a fine second and Jack Wolstencroft
third. Joshua Cowie was the best born 1994 rider in fourth position.
British Cycling's youth series silver medalist James Berry was the runaway
winner of the under 12's racing bikes. Richard Foden grabbed second place and
Thomas Mazzone recovered from a spill to take third spot. Adam Johnson (8th),
Lewis O'Connor (10th) and Alexander Haddock (11th) all continue to make good
progress in this very competitive class.
Unfortunately, the rain started to fall just as the under 14/under 16's racing
bikes left the line. The already shortened race was finally abandoned after Mark
Redhead and Matthew Looker slid off on the bottom corner. Luckily, both escaped
with cuts and bruises, although Mark was taken to Noble's for a precautionary
check up.

12th July 2004
* Competing against the top juvenile cyclists in
Britain, James Berry has finished a brilliant second overall and first boy in
the under 12's category of British Cycling's prestigious national youth circuit
race series.
James led the competition going into last Sunday's final round in Kent, but knew
that he had to cross the line ahead of his main rivals to make sure of the
championship.
Despite coming an impressive third, James lost the number one spot in the
overall standings to the winner Sarah Reynolds (Brereton Wheelers), who like
most of the other girls in the series was riding down an age group.
In the under 14's class Mark Christian and Tom Black finished 5th and 9th
overall. Unfortunately, Mark and Tom were denied the chance to increase their
points tally in the final round as they are both still recovering from illness.
* For the second year in succession Team Scottish Provident Isle of Man has
qualified for the national final of the GHS British juvenile 10 mile time trial
championship.
Overcoming the atrocious weather conditions, Matthew Looker, Mark Redhead and
Sam Looker booked the club's place in the final by winning the team prize at
last Saturday's Liverpool District Championship at Rainford.
Laura Gage was unlucky not to qualify for the final along with her three club
mates, missing the automatic entry reserved for the fastest girl by just five
seconds.
The event was won by former Scottish Provident league champion Ashley Whipp, who
put in a storming ride to beat pre race favourite Mark McNally of the Liverpool
Century RC.
The final in September will be contested by the cream of Britain's juvenile
cyclists. Previous winners include Chris Boardman and Nicole Cooke, who both
went on to became world champions.
Last year Team Scottish Provident won both the team and girl's awards.

* Nearly £400 was raised for club funds at Tynwald
Fair last Monday. Around 20 children took it in turns to pedal two bikes set up
on turbo trainers, with members of the public being invited to estimate the
total mileage covered (115.77 miles) in four hours. The person with the nearest
guess won a brand new bike courtesy of Bikestyle.
Many thanks to all the youngsters who took part, to Douglas Round Table for
allowing the club to use part of its plot at the Fair, to Bikestyle for
supplying the star prize and to Colin Cowie for coming up with the idea.
* Well done to Laura Gage and Caroline O'Neill for finishing first and second
respectively in last Thursday night's third round of the Bikestyle handicap road
race series. Laura also won the first round.
* Congratulations to Joshua Cowie for reaching the shortlist in the IOM
Newspapers/British Airways Pride in Mann campaign.
* Several team members are competing off the island this coming weekend. Matthew
and Sam Looker, Mark Redhead and Laura Gage will be on Merseyside for the
Liverpool District Final of the GHS 10 mile time trial championship, while James
Berry is travelling all the way down to Kent to defend his overall lead in the
final round of British Cycling's national youth circuit race series.
* Thanks to a £2000 donation from the Manx Public Lottery Trust the club has
been able to purchase four new Giant racing bikes from Bikestyle. Several
repesentatives from the Lottery Trust came down to the NSC last Tuesday night to
officially hand the bikes over. The machines will be used to give the children
in the Scottish Provident league the opportunity to have a go on a pukka racing
bike.
* Weather permitting, the Manx Carvery mobile catering unit will be down at the
NSC on Tuesday nights to provide a good selection of top quality food and drinks
for the cyclists and spectators attending the racing league.

6th July 2004
Conditions were perfect for the 264 competitors
who took part in last
Tuesday night's round of the Scottish Provident circuit racing league.
Continuing his recent run of good form, Thomas Bostock completed a hat-trick
of wins in the novices class. Josef Killey was the runner-up and Daniel
Sheffield returned after a week's break to claim third place. Alex Irving made a
great improvement on his previous best result to finish sixth, one place ahead
of the leading girl Kaitlin Slack. Newcomers Leonie Gilden and Juliana
Gilbertson also had good rides in 10th and 20th positions respectively.
Katie Harris bounced back from her defeat in the previous round to reclaim the
number one spot from Marcus Simpson in the "born 1999 & later" category. Alex
Cain held off Victoria Watson for third place, with Matthew Nixon and Charles
Whittaker completing the top six.
In the "born 1998" event Owen Dudley recorded his first win, taking the
chequered flag ahead of regular top three finishers Thomas Cowin and Thomas
Quayle. Fourth place went to Luis Novo-Smith and Emma Nicholson picked up the
girls' honours in fifth spot. Brett Dean was a good sixth.
Joe Harris fought off strong challenges from Matthew Bostock and Victoria
Kinrade before securing his ninth success in the "born 1997" age group. Matthew
Norrey was next across the line in fourth position followed by Breeshey Cain,
Tamara Preskey and Kathryn Hull.
Fresh from his brilliant win in the Youth Tour of Lichfield, Glen Vine's Matthew
Davies was too strong for Leon Mazzone in the long sprint at the end of the
"born 1996" race. Jamie Dudley overhauled top girl Laura Kinley for third place
and Sophie Black was a fine fifth.
Joshua Knights pulled away from the bunch for an easy victory in the "born 1995
" class. However, the battle for second place was much closer with Kirk
Michael's Jamie Everitt just edging out Nicholas Corlett, Eleanor Stokoe and
Anna Christian.
The much improved Alicia Corlett held her own with the boys in the "born
1994-91" group, grabbing an excellent second place behind Thomas Mazzone in the
six strong bunch sprint.
In a powerful display of aggressive solo riding, James Berry went from the gun
for a convincing win in the under 12's racing bikes, with Richard Foden leading
the rest of the field home over half a lap down.
After 20 laps of fast and furious action, Matthew Looker outsprinted Mark
Redhead for another impressive win in the under 14/under 16's racing bikes.
Mark Christian, who is still recovering from an infection, was third and
Caroline O'Neill was the best girl in eighth spot.
Aaron Beattie and Nicole Ellis came out on top in the "born 1997" and "born
1994-91" handicaps.

6th July 2004
Team Scottish Provident Isle of Man sent a large
squad of 24 riders to compete in last weekend's Youth Tour of Lichfield in
Staffordshire - the seventh and penultimate round of British Cycling's
prestigious youth circuit racing series.
Unfortunately, the two day event was reduced to just one day after an
administrative mix up between the local council and the police left the
organisers with no road closure order for the Sunday.
The new abridged version of the tour now consisted of two circuit races and a
short time trial.
Making a very impressive off-island debut, Glen Vine's Matthew Davies got the
team off to a flying start by winning all three stages for a superb overall
victory in the under 8's class. Team mate Leon Mazzone also put in some great
performances to grab third place on the podium.
In the under 10's category multi British Schools champion Joshua Cowie finished
13th overall followed by Alicia Corlett (21st), Alexandra Christian (22nd) and
Anna Christian (28th). Alicia produced one of the rides of the day to come 4th
in the first stage, but was penelised for an unintentional gearing infringement.
Without that handicap she could have easily picked up a top six position.
Continuing his battle with girls up to four years older than himself, James
Berry kept his hopes of the series victory very much alive with a well earned
fifth overall and first boy in the under 12's age group. Richard Foden was not
far behind in sixth spot, with Jonathan Cregeen and Thomas Maaazone 16th and
17th. A bit further down the field Rebecca Whipp, Christopher Nicholson, Laura
Faulds and Andrew Marshall all tried hard in 21st, 24th, 25th and 30th places
respectively.
An under the weather Mark Christian did well to salvage 11th position overall in
the very competitive under 14's group. An aggressive Sam Looker tried to help
Mark as much as he could on his way to a creditable 13th place - a good effort
considering that it was his first off-island race of the season. Caroline
O'Neill rode strongly all day to finish 34th overall and 8th best girl, with
Colum O'Shea 35th, Matheu Marshall 42nd, Matthew Berry 44th, Zara Harrison 45th
and Laura Gage 47th.
Continuing the excellent form that they have been showing down at the NSC on a
Tuesday night, Matthew Looker and Mark Redhead were able to mix it with the very
best of the British riders in the under 16's class. Both Manx youngsters
finished in the points, with Matthew in 13th overall and Mark 17th.

30th June 2004
Despite the threatening weather conditions at the
NSC last Tuesday night, there was very good turnout of 207 competitors for round
nine of the Scottish Provident league.
In the novices class Thomas Bostock picked up his second win, with previous
winners Ben Cunningham and Josef Killey having to settle for second and third
places respectively. Kaitlin Slack was the first girl across the line in 11th
spot.
A determined Marcus Simpson finally ended Katie Harris's unbeaten record in the
born 1999 & later category, while Dillon Cowie held off a strong challenge from
Victoria Watson to claim third position.
Thomas Cowin took advantage of series leader Aaron Faragher's absence to notch
up his third victory in the born 1998 age group. Owen Dudley and Matthew
Corkhill recorded their best results to date in second and third places and Kate
Marshall was the top girl in 11th place.
Joe Harris stormed to his eighth win in the born 1997 event, taking the
chequered flag well clear of Victoria Kinrade, Matthew Bostock, Matthew Norrey,
Breeshey Cain and Tamara Preskey. Newcomer Ben Collins was an impressive 10th in
his very first outing.
After another close tussle, Matthew Davies got the better of Leon Mazzone in the
born 1996 race. Laura Kinley was a good third and Breeshey Bond returned from a
long break to grab a fine fifth place.
Joshua Knights triumphed for a seventh time in the born 1995 class, with
Nicholas Corlett having his best ride of the series in second place. Eleanor
Stokoe edged out Anna Christian for the final place on the podium.
The combined born 1994 and born 1993-91 group was won by Thomas Mazzone and
James Berry came out on top in the under 12's racing bikes. Alicia Corlett was
the leading girl in both races.
Finally, Mark Christian outsprinted breakaway companions Matthew Looker and Mark
Redhead for the number one slot in the under 14/ under 16's twenty lapper.

* The club is sending a large squad of 25 riders
to this coming weekend's Youth Tour of Lichfield in Staffordshire. The event is
the seventh and penultimate round of British Cycling's national circuit race
series. At present James Berry is leading the under 12's class overall and Mark
Christian is lying second in the under 14's category. Tom Black, who is in 6th
spot in the under 14's, will not be competing in Lichfield as he is still
recovering from an operation he had last week to remove his appendix. The good
news is that he will be going on the trip anyway to cheer on the team.
* If you are going to the Tynwald Fair on Monday (July 5th) don't forget to
support the club's fund raising effort. Team members will be pedalling on two
turbo trainers for a period of four hours, with members of the public being
invited to estimate the number of miles covered in that time. The nearest guess
wins a major prize.

23rd June 2004
Last night's wet weather failed to dampen the
enthusiasm of the 217 competitors who turned out at the NSC for round eight of
the club's Scottish Provident circuit racing league.
The rain began just before the action started and got progressively heavier as
the evening went on, causing the organisers to shorten the races in the hope
that the programme could be completed before the heavens opened.
In the one lap novices class Thomas Bostock scored his maiden victory ahead of
regular winners Ben Cunningham and Josef Killey. Once again Kaitlin Slack was
the leading girl in sixth spot, with Molly Wooton and Olivia Preston the second
and third girl to take the chequered flag in 11th and 13th places respectively.
William Draper (7th) and Adam Callow (10th) both recorded top ten finishes for
the first time in this year's series.
Katie Harris made the long journey from Castletown worthwhile by notching up her
seventh success in the "born 1999 & later" category. Marcus Simpson was the
runner-up and Dillon Cowie beat Alex Cain to the line for third position.
Alexander Thompson had a good ride in 9th place and newcomer Ben Mazzilli did
well on his debut to finish 10th.
In an exact repeat of the previous week's result, Aaron Faragher, Thomas Cowin
and Thomas Quayle were the top three in the "born 1998" event, with Matthew
Draper grabbing fourth place. Owen Dudley and Kate Marshall - the top girl -
completed the top six leader board, while Shaun Quayle produced his best ride of
the season for a well deserved 9th.
Joe Harris and Matthew Bostock were first and second in the "born 1997" age
group, followed by Victoria Kinrade, Breeshey Cain, Tamara Preskey and Kathryn
Hull.
Arch rivals Matthew Davies and Leon Mazzone had a close dice in the "born 1996"
class before Matthew edged ahead on the finishing straight to claim his seventh
win. Jamie Dudley and best girl Laura Kinley led the rest of the field home.
Anna Christian headed the "born 1995" race for the opening lap, but was
eventually overtaken by Joshua Knights and Kevin Kelly on their way to first and
second places. However, Anna did manage to hold off the fast finishing Eleanor
Stokoe for the girls' prize.
Leading from start to finish, Ramsey's Thomas Mazzone came out on top in the
combined "born 1994" and "born 1993/92" group. Joshua Cowie, the leading born
1994 competitor, was second and Alicia Corlett third.
With the track now getting dangerously wet, the remaining two racing bike events
were cancelled for safety reasons

22nd June 2004
* Seven team members competed in the Women's Cycle
Racing Association's (WCRA) national criterium championships in Preston last
Saturday.
Laura Gage was the highest placed Team Scottish Provident IOM rider in a very
good 5th place. Caroline O'Neill was the next best in 7th spot, followed by Zara
Harrison (8th), Rebecca Whipp (12th), Alicia Corlett (13th), Laura Faulds (14th)
and Rachel James (15th).
All the girls raced in one class (12 - 16 year olds), which meant that there was
a four year gap between some of the competitors.
The Manx girls rode aggressively throughout the 30 minutes plus two laps race,
but were unsuccessful in the final push for the medals.
A fast start caused an early split in the field, with the older girls setting
the pace.
Laura, Caroline, Zara and twelve year old Alicia were all in the leading group
and riding well.
At half distance, however, a trio of riders consisting of Jessica Stoddard (Interbike
RT), Caroline Wood (Red Rose Olympic) and Marie Stewart (Horwich CC) got away in
what turned out to be the winning break.
Towards the end of the race Stewart lost contact with her two companions and was
nearly caught by the chasing pack, spearheaded by Gage.
At the finish, Stoddard edged out Wood for the title, with Stewart just holding
onto the bronze medal position ahead of Jo Whitham, who pipped Laura Gage in the
sprint for fourth place.
On Sunday the team were in Horwich for the town centre carnival races and this
time the girls were competing against the boys.
In the under 12's Alicia Corlett did well to stay with the leaders for most of
the race, crossing the line in an excellent fourth place and second girl. Rachel
James was ninth.
Liverpool Century's Mark McNally won the combined under 14's and under 16's
event, which included some of Britain's top young riders. Laura Gage and
Caroline O'Neill were second and thid girls respectively behind Marie Stewart,
while Rebecca Whipp and Laura Faulds worked hard together to maintain their
positions further down the field.

* Team Scottish Provident Isle of Man, in
conjunction with the Manx Public Lottery Trust and Bikestyle, has purchased four
brand new racing bikes for the benefit of club members in the Tuesday night
youth league at the NSC.
The aim of this exciting new initiative is to further increase the already
substanial numbers taking part in the two racing bike categories.
The bikes will be loaned to up and coming riders from the mountain bike classes
to see how they get on in the racing bike events. If they enjoy the experience
they will be encouraged to compete on a regular basis.
* The Mayor of Douglas Councillor Ritchie McNicholl is hosting a reception in
the Mayor's Parlour this coming Monday, June 21st in honour of Team Scottish
Provident Isle of Man's outstanding success at last year's British national
final of the GHS 10 mile time trial championship.
Team riders Ashley Whipp, Aaron Whipp, Elliott Moore, Cayley Ennett and Matthew
Looker will be attending the function together with members of their families
and representatives from the club's longtime sponsor Scottish Provident
International.
The impressive trophies and medals that the youngsters won (first team and girl)
will also be on display.

17th June 2004
There was another fantastic turn out of 249
youngsters at the NSC last Tuesday evening (15th June) for round seven of the
club's summer youth league.
For the second week in succession, Ben Cunningham triumphed in the novices
class. Nathan Corrican was a good second and Daniel Sheffield third. Kaitlin
Slack was the first girl in sixth spot, closely followed by Saoirse Carrol and
Laura Corkhill,
Katie Harris and Marcus Simpson filled the top two slots in the "born 1999 &
later" age group, with round six winner Alex Cain in third position. Nathan Pope
had a good ride to finish a fine fifth.
In the "born 1998" event Aaron Faragher powered to his fifth win, taking the
chequered flag well clear of Thomas Cowin and Thomas Quayle. The top girl was
Kate Marshall in ninth position.
Defending champion Joe Harris strengthened his chances of retaining the title by
notching up another impressive win, his sixth, in the "born 1997" category.
Victoria Kinrade edged out Mathew Norrey and Matthew Bostock for second place.
After several near misses, Laura Kinley finally got onto the podium in the "born
1996" race, finishing an excellent third behind Matthew Davies and Leon Mazzone.
Fourth place went to Jamie Dudley and Jack Murray did well to come fifth in his
first outing of the season.
Anna Christian produced one of the rides of the night to grab second place in
the "born 1995" class and Thomas Mazzone got the verdict over Joshua Cowie in
the sprint finish to the combined "born 1994" and "born 1993/92/91" group.
Once again the two racing bike events provided some very fast and exciting
action for the spectators. In the under 12's Richard Foden beat James Berry,
Oliver Shimmin and Thomas Mazzone in the lunge for the line, while Matthew
Looker pipped Mark Christian, Mark Redhead and Tom Black for his fourth win in
the under 14's and under 16's. Alicia Corlett and Caroline O'Neill were the best
girls in the two races.
Amy Wooton and Gareth Jones came out on top in the keenly contested "born 1998"
and "born 1995" handicaps.

16th June 2004
* An all female group of team members will be in
Preston this coming Saturday for the Women's Cycle Racing Association's national
criterium championships. The seven girls will be riding in the supporting event
for 12 to 16 year olds. On Sunday the girls will be competing in the Horwich

* A new trophy in memory of the late great Steve Hislop, a patron of Team
Scottish Provident IOM, will be presented at the club's prize presentation in
the Villa Marina on Saturday, 4th September. It is hoped that Steve's mother
Margaret will be on the Island to present the prestigious award.
* Four club members competed in round six of
British Cycling's national youth circuit race series, staged on the Hillingdon
circuit in London last Sunday (June 13th).
In the very competitive under 12's race James Berry was in the thick of the
action throughout. Unfortunately while leading the race, he went wide on the
final corner and was badly placed for the bunch sprint, crossing the line in a
disappointing 19th position.
James still retains a comfortable lead in the overall standings but with only a
rider's best five results to count, the final outcome will not be decided until
all eight rounds of the competition have been completed.
Despite suffering from a bad head cold, Mark Christian rode with great
determination to finish a fine fifth in the under 14's event and preserve his
second place overall , although he did lose some more ground to series leader
Alex Aldham-Breary (PCA Ciclos Uno), who picked up his fourth win of the series.
Caroline O'Neill, who gets stronger as the season unfolds, mixed it with the
boys in the under 14's category and did well to stay with the main bunch until
the final two laps of the race, eventually finishing 33rd in a large field of
over 40 riders.
In only her second appearance in the competition, Alexandra Christian made good
progress to take a well deserved 14th spot and 6th girl in the under 10's age
group.

* The club's fund raising effort at Tynwald Fair
on Monday, 5th July will be in the form of a "guess the mileage" competition, to
be held between 9.00am and 1.00pm.
Using two turbo trainers, team members will take it in turn to try and pedal as
far as they can in 30 minute sessions.
For just £1, visitors to the Fair can try and guess the how many miles the
riders have covered in the four hours, with the nearest estimate winning a
fantastic prize.
If you want to take part or help in anyway contact Colin Cowie or Dot down at
the NSC on a Tuesday night.

9th June 2004
* With many of the regular competitors on holiday
or choosing not to venture out in the busy TT traffic, there was a relatively
low turn out of 91 youngsters for round six of the Scottish Provident league,
staged in excellent conditions at the NSC last night (Tuesday, 8th June).
Trying hard not to be distracted by the Red Arrows aircraft display team
performing overhead, Ben Cunningham picked up his second win in the novices
class ahead of series leader Josef Killey. Third placed Kaitlin Slack was the
best girl, with Nathan Corrican, Thomas Bostock and Liam Gregson completing the
top six.
In the absence of five times winner Katie Harris, there was a maiden victory for
Alex Cain in the "born 1999 & later" age group. Leading girl Eleanor Davies was
an impressive second and Owen Dawson a very good third.
Following a very close battle, Thomas Cowin pipped Luis Novo-Smith for the
honours in the "born 1998" category. Third place went to Owen Dudley and Kate
Marshall took the girls' prize in fifth position.
In what proved to be a good night for the girls, Victoria Kinrade and Breeshey
Cain filled the top two places in the "born 1997" race. Matthew Bostock was the
first boy followed by Aaron Beattie, David Heyes and Matthew Naylor.
Matthew Davies chalked up his fifth success in the "born 1996" event, leaving
Jamie Dudley and Ashley Faragher to fight over the runners-up spot. Top girl
Laura Kinley held her own with the boys to finish a fine fourth.
The outcome of the "born 1995" class was decided on the line, with Kirk
Michael's Jamie Everitt just getting the verdict from a fast finishing Eleanor
Stokoe. Dylan Quayle led the rest of the field home for third place.
After fending off challenges from Jack Wolstencroft and Alicia Corlett, Joshua
Cowie came out on top in the combined "born 1994" and "born 1993,92,91" group.
British Cycling's national series leader James Berry went from the gun in the
"under 12's racing bikes" and was never headed, while Oliver Shimmim and
Jonathan Cregeen scored their best results to date in second and third positions
respectively.
The in form Matthew Looker made it three wins in a row in the "under 14/under 16
racing bikes", with Mark Redhead and Niall Shimmin grabbing the remaining places
on the podium. Colum O'Shea had a good ride in fifth spot and Laura Gage did
well to finish sixth in her first outing since recovering from a bout of
tonsillitis.
Sophie Black and Stephen Smith won the "born 1996" and "born 1994,93,92,91"
handicaps.
* There were some more outstanding performances
from team members at last Sunday's Brentwood Town Centre Criteriums - the fifth
round of British Cycling's national youth circuit race series.
Mark Christian and James Berry were an excellent third and fourth in the under
14 and under 12 classes respectively, with Caroline O'Neill the fourth best girl
in the former category.
Jonathan Cregeen and Alexandra Christian's positions are still to be confirmed.
In the overall standings James has further increased his lead in the under 12's,
while Mark has maintained his second spot in the under 14's.
In the week prior to the event a holidaying Jonathan Cregeen competed in various
events in the same area.
On the Monday he finished 3rd in the "Beyond Mountain Bikes" criteriums at
Hillingdon and on the following day was 5th in the Tuesday evening youth league
at the same venue.
Finally,in Castle Coombe On Thursday night Jonathan stormed to victory in the
under 12's age group.

* Another large total of 260 competitors took part
in the latest round (May 25th) of the Scottish Provident league, held in perfect
conditions at a sun drenched NSC.
Josef Killey recovered from two consecutive defeats in the novices class to
notch up his third win of the series. Nathan Corrican was second and last week's
winner Kaitlin Slack was the best girl in third place.
In the "born 1999 & later" age group Katie Harris maintained her unbeaten
record, with Marcus Simpson recording his best result to date in second
position. Alex Cain was third followed by Dillon Cowie, Matthew Nixon and James
Mathieson-Nelson.
Aaron Faragher went from the gun in the "born 1998" event and stayed clear all
the way to the chequered flag, as did Joe Harris in the "born 1997" race.
With main rival Leon Mazzone holidaying in Canada, Matthew Davies had it all his
own way in the "born 1996" category. However, there was a close dice for second
place between Ashley Faragher and Callum Millward, with Ashley eventually
getting the verdict. The impressive Laura Kinley was the first girl home in
fourth spot.
Joshua Knights kept his challenge for the overall honours on track with a fourth
win in the "born 1995" class. Runner-up James Everitt had to work hard to hold
off Eleanor Stokoe and Anna Christian, who were battling for the girls' honours.
The combined "born 1994" and "born 1993/92/91" race provided one of the most
exciting finishes of the night, with Sam Black outsprinting Jack Wolstencroft
and Joshua Cowie on the line. Top girl Alicia Corlett was a good fourth.
James Berry got an early gap in the under 12's racing bikes and held it to the
line, leaving chasers Richard Foden and Oliver Shimmin to fight over second
place. Newcomer Adam Johnson was an excellent seventh against much more
experienced opposition.
Coming to the end of the 25 lap "under 14/under 16 racing bikes" event six
riders were still in with a shout. On the final circuit Sam Looker made a
spirited attempt to get away, but was reeled in on the back straight. In the end
it was Matthew Looker who took the sprint just ahead of Mark Christian and Mark
Redhead.
Dylan Cook bounced back from a minor spill in his scratch race to grab first
place in the "born 1997" handicap and middlemarker Ruby Agate rode strongly to
come out on top in the "born 1995" equivalent.
* Team members James Berry, Mark Christian and Tom
Black were in London last weekend for round four of British Cycling's national
youth circuit race series.
Overcoming the very hot conditions, James was ninth in the under 12's class,
with Mark and Tom finishing fifth and nineteenth respectively in the under 14's
age group.
In the overall standings James maintains a comfortable lead in his group a clear
29 points ahead of his nearest rival Callum Thompson (Team Keyne). In the under
14's, however, Mark has been demoted from joint first to second and Tom has
dropped from equal third to fifth.
The next two rounds of the competition are the Brentwood Town Centre Criteriums
in Essex on Sunday, 6th June followed one week later by the Hillingdon Youth
Circuit Races in West London.

by the two leading girls Victoria Kinrade and Tamara Preskey in second and third
places respectively. Relative newcomer Thomas Dalton-Brown did well to grab
fourth spot.
After travelling in close company for the opening two laps, Matthew Davies rode
away from Leon Mazzone on the final circuit to claim his hat trick in the "born
1996" group. Ashley Faragher was third and Laura Kinley the best girl in fifth
position.

sprint for the line. Caroline O'Neill took the girls' honours.

trouble in adapting to the different riding technique required for the track and
were soon enjoying themselves alongside the more experienced riders.
* Congratulations to club patron Neil Hodgson for picking up the Ambassador of

circuit race series, consisted of a hill climb, a time trial and two circuit
races.
Overcoming the sometimes very cold, wet and windy conditions, James Berry was an
impressive third overall in the under 12's class and was the first boy to finish
behind two older girls riding down two age groups.
In the under 14's category Mark Christian repeated his performance in the
opening round for another excellent third overall, while the ever improving Tom
Black went one better than last time to grab fifth spot.
